Frequently Asked Questions
Compounding is the art and science of creating personalized medications. Unlike big manufacturers that mass-produce drugs in standard dosages, we formulate medication from raw ingredients to meet your specific needs—whether that’s a different strength, a unique flavor, or an allergen-free formula.
Yes. Compounded medications are prescription drugs and require an order from a licensed practitioner (MD, DO, Vet, NP, PA).
Coverage varies by plan. While some insurance plans cover compounded medications, others may not. We can provide you with a universal claim form (UCF) that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
Yes. We adhere to strict standards set by the State Board of Pharmacy and follow guidelines from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). We use only high-quality chemicals sourced from FDA-registered facilities.
There are several reasons doctors prescribe compounded drugs:
Commercial Unavailability: The drug is backordered or discontinued by the manufacturer.
Allergies: You are allergic to dyes, gluten, lactose, or preservatives found in commercial pills.
Dosage Precision: You need a strength not available commercially (e.g., 0.5mg instead of 5mg).
Administration Issues: You or your child cannot swallow pills and need a liquid or cream instead.
Yes! We can prepare medications for dogs, cats, birds, and even exotic pets. We can add flavors like tuna, chicken, or beef to make dosing easier, or create transdermal gels that you simply rub inside your pet’s ear.
The FDA approves mass-manufactured drugs for the general population. Because compounded medications are custom-made for one specific patient, the final mixture is not FDA-approved; however, the active pharmaceutical ingredients we use are FDA-approved.
Your medication is made on-site in our specialized lab by licensed pharmacists and certified technicians who have undergone extensive training in compounding techniques.
In most cases, yes. Compounded medications are generally considered eligible medical expenses for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA). We recommend checking with your specific plan administrator to be sure.
The price depends on the ingredients, the dosage, and the form (cream vs. capsule). We are happy to give you a price quote before we make the medication—just give us a call!
This is common! Many doctors are used to standard prescribing. We are happy to call your doctor on your behalf to discuss potential compounding solutions that might help you. We can suggest formulas and dosages to them directly.
Because we are making your medication from scratch, it takes a little longer than a standard refill. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for us to formulate, mix, and quality-check your prescription.
Due to State Health Regulations, we cannot accept returns on prescription medications once they have left the pharmacy, especially since they are custom-made specifically for you.
